American Sayings and Expressions

A Lemon

a bad purchase

Air-head

a person who is not very intelligent; a "spacey" person

Barbecue, Bar-B-Q, BBQ

an outdoor party where meat is cooked over an open fire; a cook-out

Beat Around the Bush

to talk indirectly about a topic

Baloney

indicative of foolishness; used to question the truthfulness of what is being said

Bomb

to do poorly on something; e.g. "I bombed the examination."

Buck

dollar bill

Call Up or Give a Call

to contact by telephone; to ring someone

Catch You Later

phrase indicating that someone is leaving

Corny

something stupid or overly simplistic

Down to Earth

a person who is straight-forward or practical

Drag

boring, not interesting; e.g. "That movie was a drag."

Dutch Treat

payment for one’s own food or entertainment

End of One’s Rope

at the end of patience with someone or something

Fat Chance

very little chance

Flunk

to fail at something; e.g. "I flunked Math 120"

Gag

a joke, not serious; e.g. "Bring a gag gift to the party."

Get It Together

to get organized

Get Off My Back

to ask others to leave a person alone

Got Up On the Wrong Side Of the Bed

to be irritable

Hang In There

to keep trying (an encouragement)

Tough Nut To Crack

someone who is hard to understand or something that is difficult to solve

Have Cold Feet

to be nervous or anxious

In Hot Water

in trouble

Jump Down One’s Throat

to demand in a rude manner

Junk Food

snack foods; e.g. candy, soda, chips/ crisps

Keep Your Shirt On

to be calm or patient

Let One’s Hair Down

to relax, to act informally

Make The Grade

to pass the test

Nerd

A person who spends an overly abundant amount of time studying and working instead of being with others.

Not!

to express refusal or denial of something; a statement to show you were just joking.

On Me

an offer to pay the bill; e.g. "Dinner is on me."

Park It

command to sit down

Peeved

disgusted or irritated

Pig Out

to eat a lot

Pipe Down

a command to be quiet

Pooped

tired; e.g. "I've been working since 5 a.m., and I am pooped."

Pot Luck

a gathering where everyone brings food to share with others

Psyched/ Pumped

excited about something

Rain Check

an invitation to accept an offer at a later date

Rat Race

a hectic situation

Snowed Under/ Swamped

overloaded (with work or assignments or obligations)

Step On It

hurry or move faster

Ticked Off

angry or annoyed

Tightwad

very conservative with money; "penny pincher"

To Go

to take food out of a restaurant

Way to Go

expression of approval or praise

Whole Different Ball Game

totally new situation

Zoo

a chaotic situation
