There are several types of employment authorization that
an international student may qualify for: on-campus
work, practical training or academic training, and
employment due to severe economic hardship. To obtain
information on employment you should call the Admissions
Center to arrange an appointment with a DSO.
Income Taxes
Your Designated School Official cannot advise you on
income taxes, but the Admissions Center can provide you
with the forms you will need to file. You do not need to
make an appointment to pick up these forms.
For more information on income taxes, visit the
Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) web site at
http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/international/article/0,,id=96431,00.html.
Social Security Cards
In order to be eligible to apply for a Social Security
card you must have work authorization for on or off
campus employment. Social Security Administration
regulations prohibit the issuance of Social Security
numbers to F-1 students without work authorization.
We recommend that you apply at the Social Security
Office located at 450 Stuart Road, Cleveland, Tennessee
37312. The best way to reach the Social Security Office
in Cleveland is to call 423-339-0519. The office is open
Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You
will need to bring your passport, Form I-94 and Form
I-20 or IAP-66, and a letter of request from the
Admissions Center to get this number.
